Immerse yourself in the deepest soul of Puglia with this Pizzica and Taranta dance class, an experience that goes beyond a simple dance lesson to become a journey into the heart of Salento’s culture. Among the centuries-old olive trees of the countryside of Ceglie Messapica, just a few kilometers from Brindisi and Taranto, you will rediscover the ancient therapeutic dance that for centuries liberated the “tarantate” from the symbolic poison of the spider.
Pizzica isn't just a folk dance but an ancestral ritual born from tarantism, a unique anthropological phenomenon of Salento. According to tradition, the bite of the taranta (the venomous spider) caused a form of possession that only frenzied music and dance could cure. The "tarantate," predominantly women, would dance for hours or entire days to the obsessive rhythm of tambourines until completely healed.
For 2.5 hours in the silent countryside of Ceglie Messapica, you'll learn much more than simple dance steps. Local masters will guide you through:
During the experience, you'll discover stories and legends passed down through time, rituals linked to the tarantula bite that drove men and women mad, and how dance was the only cure. You'll also learn about modern academic research on this unique phenomenon of Pugliese culture.
Pizzica is now celebrated at the famous Festival della Taranta in Melendugno (Lecce), an international event that has made this dance famous worldwide. With this experience, you'll have the opportunity to learn the steps, passion, and history of this tradition directly from local keepers.
The experience concludes with a restorative moment: a brunch featuring local products and wine, perfect for relaxing after dancing and savoring authentic Pugliese flavors. Coffee, tea, and water are included to complete this convivial moment.
