In an intimate 3-hour workshop with a maximum of 6 participants, you’ll uncover the secrets of an art that made Vietri famous worldwide, recognized as a UNESCO heritage since 1997.
Vietri sul Mare ceramics are more than objects: they are fragments of Mediterranean history telling centuries of cultural influences. From the Byzantine monks who introduced the first techniques in the Middle Ages, to the Arab influences bringing geometric motifs, up to the German artists of the 1920s who created the iconic donkey symbol of the town – every piece tells a story.
The vibrant colors of Vietri majolica – cobalt blue of the sea, lemon yellow, emerald green of the Mediterranean vegetation – come from ancient glaze recipes carefully passed down through generations. The famous “riggiole”, decorative tiles adorning the majolica dome of the Church of San Giovanni Battista visible from the sea, have become the emblem of this art that transforms clay into poetry.
In the heart of Vietri sul Mare, just steps from the station and the historic center, you’ll enter the cozy Pulcinella Sciòroom atelier, where Elvira, a passionate master ceramicist, will guide you through all stages of ceramic creation:
Hand Modeling (First Hour) – You’ll start with basic clay manipulation techniques, creating small animals or objects using the coil method, the ancient art of building shapes with clay cords. Feel the clay come to life in your hands while discovering the endless possibilities of this primal material.
Potter’s Wheel (Second Hour) – The most exciting moment: seated at the wheel, with wet hands on spinning clay, you’ll experience centering, opening, and lifting the walls of a vase. It’s not easy – it requires coordination, patience, and sensitivity – but Elvira will guide you through this ancient dance between human and material.
Decoration and Glazing (Third Hour) – You’ll discover traditional dipping techniques that give Vietri ceramics their characteristic shine. Then, using fine brushes, you’ll decorate a tile with traditional patterns – geometric, naturalistic, or imaginative – using ceramic glazes in the colors typical of local tradition.
With a maximum of 6 participants, this workshop ensures personalized attention and an intimate atmosphere where you can truly learn and experiment. The family-like environment of the workshop, often outdoors in the courtyard when weather permits, creates the magical atmosphere of an artisan’s studio where time seems to stop.
The workshop includes all necessary materials – clay, glazes, colors, tools – plus an apron, water, and coffee to make the experience even more enjoyable. Perfect for couples, families with children aged 9+, or small groups of friends who want to share a unique creative moment.

Then, using fine brushes, you'll decorate a tile with traditional motifs - geometric patterns, nature-inspired designs, or whimsical creations - using ceramic glazes in the authentic colors of local Italian tradition.
The pieces need time to dry (24–48 hours) and then must be fired twice at over 1000°C, a process that takes several days. Elvira can arrange shipping for your finished pieces at an additional cost, or you can pick them up if you stay in the area for at least a week.
Absolutely! Most participants have never worked with clay before. Elvira is an expert at teaching beginners, and her patience is legendary. All you need is curiosity and a willingness to get your hands dirty.
